Surfing Media Revenue Generation

In this blog post for my sports media class, I have chosen to review www.surfermagazing.com and 2 of the revenue generating potentials on their site.

The print version of Surfer Magazine has always relied on advertising and subscriptions to generate revenue.  Their website is no different in terms of revenue generation from ads and subscription sales but in addition, just about everything else digital and otherwise is an option for impressions and potential sales. 

A direct relation to a revenue stream would be the advertising banner/tiles shown down the right side of the website. The advertisers are more than likely paying for this placement and or, knowing the media business, at a minimum, doing some sort of trade, which in the end can equal revenue.

The second source of revenue generation would be the online store promoting an entire surf product store.

At some level one can only assume there has to be some kick back revenue opportunities for Surfermagazing.com through product placement in the videos they play for free. These videos are laden with products related directly to what they sell in their online store and the advertisers promoting all over the site.

What wave?

So you are here now.... right?  Why?  The waves near you are not pumping?  The weather is horrid?  A number of factors can keep us water babies out of our preferred environment, the water, but does that mean we are all dried up?  I live in a high desert environment.  Dry, 3 hours from the ocean and no waves.  Well, no ocean waves that is.  Yeah, I know there are going to be some of you out there saying, "what is a wave if is not in the ocean?".

For a number of year now surfers have been looking to the rivers all over the globe for waves. Near my house there is a wave grinding 24-7 for over 6 months.  Why or why not you would want to surf a wave like this. Consider your last weekend at the beach. Did you hit the road thinking how limited the amount of time on your board was going to be?  Or did you think "Big wave board", only to find out the waves were 2ft?  Imagine the wave report being the same for 4 weeks and good the entire time.

It takes me 15 minutes to get there.  I can crank turns off the lip over 1000 times in 3 hours.  Yes, you are right, this is not an ocean wave.  It makes no difference if you approach surfing this wave as tool to improve your surfing beyond what you could do in 10 summers of paddling around in the ocean.  Sometimes we use a fixed rope to flick into the lip with realistic speed.  How ever you want to do it is up to you.  You will improve your surfing!

The people that surf this wave have decided to keep a lid on it.  If you find it yourself, all good.  If you show up with a crew, you will get a vibe the will make you want to get out and leave.  If you ask me for directions, I will delete your post.  Yes, it's exclusive and I am sorry!  Get out there and do what we all do as surfers, find it for yourself.  

It's warm outside and the water level is good now so don't wait.  Maybe I will see you out there?

Welcome to We All Surf!

Hello fellow surfers,

Welcome to the "We All Surf" blog. This blog was created with the mid-level surfer and waterman in mind. All entries, audio/video links and content will be relevant to the up and coming, weekend surfer and general waterman. This is an open forum for input and feed back, story telling, trip reports and gear input from anyone with an interest in board related water sports but is not a pro or semi-pro level athlete.

I have been surfing for over 20 years and come at this blog from exactly the level I feel about 98% of the rest of us normal athletes preform at. At times I will be bring to light some news from the surfing world and sharing pictures collected from the greater web as well.

I encourage you to offer stories of trips you have taken and unique ways in which you experience the water.  This is more of a lifestyle blog than it is about who won what comp or how rad some pro was at some grinding shelf out in the middle of the ocean. This is a chance for the “average” man to step up and, if not shine, at least have some sense at least one person has read your story.
